Save Money: Create Organic Garlic Powder from Scratch

With the cost of organic garlic powder sky rocketing it makes sense to create your own garlic powder. Now think about the heavy metals that are being reported in all spices on the shelf regardless if they are organic or not. Plus, no one is able to report on where the heavy metals are coming from.

Now that takes making your own garlic to an entirely new level.

Making your own garlic powder is simple to make.

Things you’ll need to make garlic powder.

  • Garlic: They don’t have to be super fresh, but the fresher they are, the more flavor you’ll get. We always take whatever garlic we have left over from our harvest before they sprout and make garlic powder. Our garlic bulbs are about nine to ten months old, and they still make great garlic powder.
  • A blender or food processor to grind up the garlic bulbs as fine as you can.
  • A freeze dryer or dehydrator to get all the water out of the garlic.
  • Trays for whichever machine you’re using where the ground up garlic cannot fall through the tray.
  • A spoon or other utensil to scrape the ground up garlic into your trays. Plus, a utensil to for putting the dehydrated or freeze-dried garlic back into the food processor or blender to make powder.
  • Container for storage. We use a canning jar.
  • A funnel to put ground garlic into the canning jars.

Instructions

  1. Peel off the dirt, stem, and roots from the garlic bulb.
  2. Break the bulb up into cloves. Use any clean covering from the garlic.
  3. Put the broken up cloves into a food processor or blender. Process until smooth to slightly chunky. Making it easy to spread the mixture onto a tray.
  4. Put the ground up garlic onto a tray for your freeze dryer or dehydrator. On the dehydrator, I use the solid trays on top of the wire rack.
  5. Put the racks into your machine and process according to your machine’s instructions for herbs.
  6. Once dried and crumbly. Put the dehydrated or freeze-dried garlic into the blender or food process.
  7. Grind until you get the type of powdered garlic you want. The more you grind, the more your garlic will be a powder. The less you grind, the more your garlic remains a granulated herb.
  8. Put the finished garlic into air-tight containers for long-term storage, or use. We use canning jars.

Creating your own garlic powder is easy and cheap.
